An Open Letter to Educators,
Step 1
for taking an online course is to go to the course page.
Step 2
is to read the description and if it sounds like a course you could benefit from, buy it!
I enjoy sharing what I've learned. It's nice to help others find new tools and strategies so they can better share what they know. In 2007, I began working with Dinah Zike at the Dinah Zike Academy in Comfort, Texas. Though I could immediately appreciate their benefit to learners, it took me a good year or so to really “get” how to use her 3-D interactive graphic organizers known as Foldables. For that first year, I was learning the folds and struggling to think of applications. These days, so many years later, I can easily generate ideas for utilizing this strategy. Because I know it can take time for this strategy to become second-nature, I aim to be available to you as a resource while you're figuring things out.
I love to know my options when I’m making a decision, even the options I’m pretty sure are out of my reach or not of interest—I still want to offer at least passing consideration to all the possibilities. This website is an effort to offer a digital option for Dinah Zike training and strategies for those who can’t get to the Dinah Zike Academy in Comfort, Texas. It is also a place for me to share some of the things I’ve learned and come to value along the way.
You might be working with an entire classroom of learners as a teacher, or in small groups or individually as a content-area instructional coach, or a parent working with your child(ren), and you don’t want to use the same strategies all the time or your learners need some hands-on tools.
Here are the current options for how we might work together:
Online courses are available. Three initial courses are in the works: Classic Independent Foldables for Elementary (grades K-5); Classic Independent Foldables for Middle School and High School (grades 6-12); and a course on Projects and Classroom Displays, which could include unit study projects and end-of-course projects for any grade level. These courses include an option for you to book an online appointment with me; that’s included in the price, so I can answer your particular questions. These courses are specifically aimed at teachers or instructors (including parents) and include some ideas for how to pace your learners’ introduction to these hands-on strategies. All courses include 1-year access, an optional 30-minute phone/Zoom call with me to answer questions, and a code to get a free Big Book from Dinah.com!
There are free videos offered through Dinah.com showing individual folds and those are ideal for sharing with your learners as you introduce a new fold.
My online courses focus on Dinah’s original Foldables, rather than Notebook Foldables. The originals really adapt well to both in-person and online learning, and can be added to instruction at any point, so they are easy to experiment with.
In-person courses are available through www.dinah.com or orders@dinah.com. I still work with Dinah Zike and our specialty is doing courses at the amazing Dinah Zike Academy (DZA) or at your school or other site. We hope to schedule in-person sessions at DZA starting in 2022.
Step 1
for scheduling an in-person session is to send an email to orders@dinah.com with a request for a workshop with me or more information about courses at DZA.
Step 2
is for you to return a completed Workshop Planning Form, which they'll send you if you asked about a workshop, and get it on the calendar!
I hope we get a chance to work together soon.
